Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque: Visitor Guide to Brunei’s Iconic Golden Landmark

A Testament to Faith and Prosperity
Located majestically in the heart of the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB), the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque (often abbreviated as SOAS Mosque) is arguably Brunei’s most recognized national and spiritual landmark. Named after the nation’s 28th Sultan, Omar Ali Saifuddien III, who is widely regarded as the Architect of Modern Brunei, the mosque was completed in 1958. Its striking appearance, combining immense wealth with profound devotion, has rightly earned it the title of one of the most beautiful mosques in the Asia-Pacific region.

Architectural Grandeur and Imported Materials
The mosque’s design is a stunning and unique architectural fusion, combining elements of Mughal architecture (seen in its vast dome and symmetry) with the European Italian Renaissance style. This blend was conceived by the Italian architect and sculptor, Cavalieri R. Nolli, based on the Sultan’s own initial vision. The materials used in its construction speak directly to Brunei's prosperity: the towering dome is covered in shimmering pure gold Venetian mosaics, the walls and majestic pillars are crafted from exquisite Italian marble, and the floor is laid with high-quality granite sourced from Shanghai. Furthermore, the main prayer hall is illuminated by ornate crystal chandeliers imported from England and covered with hand-woven carpets from Saudi Arabia and Belgium.

The Lagoon, the Barge, and Local Significance
Adding to its dramatic aesthetic, the mosque sits within a serene, man-made lagoon on the banks of the Brunei River, near the historic Kampong Ayer. This unique placement allows the mosque's golden dome and white marble exterior to reflect perfectly on the still water, creating an iconic, tranquil scene—especially at sunset. In the lagoon rests a magnificent replica of a 16th-century Royal Barge, the Mahligai. This stone ship was commissioned in 1967 to commemorate the 1,400th anniversary of the Nuzul Al-Quran (the revelation of the Holy Quran) and was historically used as a stage for Quran reading competitions. The entire complex is not just a place of worship but a direct symbol of Brunei's national philosophy: Melayu Islam Beraja (Malay Islamic Monarchy).

Getting There
The mosque is located in the central BSB area and is very accessible. If you are staying at any downtown hotels (such as The Brunei Hotel or Higher Hotel), it is a pleasant 5-to-15 minute walk from the city center. Taxis are available, though limited, starting around BND $3.50, with short city rides typically costing between BND $5–10. From the Brunei International Airport (BWN), expect a 15-minute taxi ride costing approximately BND $20–25. Bus service is limited and should not be relied upon for evening visits as it usually ceases around 6:00 PM.

Essential Visitor Rules and Photography Tips
The mosque is an active place of worship, so respecting the rules is mandatory. The compound, exterior, and gardens are generally open for photos at all times. The best time to visit is during the late afternoon (4:00 PM onwards), allowing you to capture the golden dome's intense glow at sunset and the spectacular illuminated reflection once night falls.

Visiting Hours: The mosque is generally open for visitors (non-Muslims) from Saturday to Thursday during specific windows (typically 08:30–12:00, 13:30–15:00, and 16:30–17:30). It is closed all day on Fridays for the main congregational prayers.

Dress Code: Modest attire is strictly enforced. Men must wear long pants and tops with sleeves; women must cover their hair, arms, and legs. Free robes and headscarves are always provided at the entrance for non-Muslim visitors.

Inside the Mosque: Non-Muslims are permitted to enter certain areas of the main hall during visiting hours, but entry into the main prayer hall is strictly forbidden. Photography is not permitted inside the mosque.
